I can tell you that Marshall, Fowlerville and Ottawa Lake definitely made it to fruition. Marshall is an abandoned porn store; Fowlerville is now Fowlerville Farms; and Ottawa Lake is a Marathon truckstop. All three still resemble Nix Farms buildings.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. Here is the status of the former Nickerson Farms in Kansas:
ReplyDeleteColby-used as part of an outlet mall. Torn down now.
Emporia-burned down 1983.
Oklahoma-
Blackwell- was used as part of an outlet mall. Under the same ownership as Colby, Kansas.
Mulhall- now a church.
Hedville-abandoned, former OutPost Fun Center.
Paxico-Wyldewood Cellars Winery
Russell-Torn down in 2002 for new motel. Had been used as a boat repair shop.
Blackwell was not used as part of an outlet mall. It was first turned into a bar and then it was purchased privately and used as a junk place for old equipment. Now that property belongs to the small airport close to it.
DeleteHeadville Kansas was torn down
DeletePaxico Kansas was set in fire by arsonist who died in the process and the store was torn down
I saw a newspaper entry on the Paxico store burning, but did not know about the arsonist part. I bet it burned very quickly, those buildings were poorly built to start with.
DeleteThe Topeka building is now the Kansas VFW headquarters. It is at 115 Gage Blvd., near the entrance ramp to I-70.
DeleteThe Topeka building now houses the Department of Kansas VFW. It is at 115 SW Gage Blvd., near the entrance ramp to I-70.
DeleteThe one near Paxico is still a winery.
DeleteIndiana entry of Mt. Comfort is wrong. It was New Lisbon Indiana off of I-70
ReplyDeleteYou are correct!..and this was The Highest Volume Store in the entire chain of Nickerson Farms!!
DeleteHere is a google image of what is left of the sign. Looks like the Stuckey's at that exit is gone as well. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.8506874,-85.2627871,3a,15y,79.6h,90.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ske-FAxYs06WH4K-yifV3iw!2e0!7i3328!8i1664!6m1!1e1
DeleteInteresting. I worked at the New Lisbon location from late 77-80. started as a dishwasher in the slow season and as janitor and maintenance during the tourist season. They moved me out to the gas station area where I worked until I quit. I kept the exterior clean and had a good group of regular customers who traveled between Columbus, Dayton, Ohio and Indianapolis.
DeleteI was born in 72 and growing up, Nickerson Farms was a treat. I remember the bees/honey and the awesome food. 💕
DeleteThe one in Honey Creek, Iowa was last called Iowa Feed and Grain. It closed many years ago and was still sitting empty when the Missouri River flooded it the summer of 2011. The last time I was by there, It was just two piles of rubble.
ReplyDeleteAmazing; I was involved w/ Nickerson Farms, I openened or was involved w/ many ie; Dexter, Mn, Clinton Falls, Mn., Worthington, Mn., Eldin, mo., Honey Creek, Ia., New Braunfels, Tx., Marion, Tx., Picaho Peak, Az., Little Point, ill.., Rennesalear, Ind., New Lisbon, Ind., Shepardville, Ky., Mt. Cory, Oh., Fargo, Oh., Ottawa Lake, Mi., Belleville, Mi., Marshall, Mi., Fowlerville, Mi. (2)., In 1981, Nickerson's became a franchisee of Godfather's Pizza, I opened 20 pizza restaurants in Ohio & Hawaii! I opened more, but these are some!!!
ReplyDeleteWere you a manager, are you in the area, around 73 until Mt Cry until it burnt down
DeleteI drove by the Paxico, Kansas site today. Though the roof isn't red you can still tell it was a NF and its operating as a winery now. Its still in really good condition!!
ReplyDeleteI also drove by the Loveland Colorado site a few weeks back. It is also in good shape. The last time I was in it, probably 10 years ago, it was a Western Wear store but I don't know what it is now.
ReplyDeleteThe Nickerson Farms building at Hedville Kansas has been torn down for a couple of years now. The numbers are dwindling.
ReplyDeleteMt. Cory Ohio has been torn down and serving as a storage lot for semis for at least a couple of decades.
ReplyDeletePhillipsburg, MO is now a candy "factory"
ReplyDeleteStotts City, MO is abandoned
Menifee, AR is abandoned
Widener, AR is an adult bookstore
The Fargo Ohio is Marengo and it's still standing looks still the same but is now called farmstead family restaurant.
ReplyDeleteMy family opened a byob dance hall at the Sanger location in 1985. It was a nice family place where we provided the music, set-ups and dance floor. That was until the First Baptist Church of Sanger decided it was too sinful and ran-off our customers by having a local police officer and deacon of the church station himself outside every night.
ReplyDeleteTwo weeks after we shut down a "legitament business concern" bought the place and opened a porn palace that is still opened to this day.
Sadly hilarious.
DeleteSadly hilarious.
DeleteClosed now 2018. Roof is missing shingles. Drove by it this weekend on our way to Stillwater OK.
DeleteAnd as a longtime Sanger resident, I can confirm that story about the dancehall.
DeleteDemolished in 2020. Now the land is a travel center called the Sportsman 2. After Nickerson Farms it was T.K.'s adult video then K.T.'s. The running joke was they changed positions after a while.
As a footnote, that same Baptist church kept Sanger dry for DECADES. Now we not only have beer and wine but also liquor stores. Go figure.
The Weimar, TX location is still there. The structure looks like it's in decent shape from the freeway. I believe it was another restaurant briefly after Nickerson Farms shut down but it's been quite awhile since it's been operational.
ReplyDeleteJust drove past the Weimar one the other day. Remember stopping there when it was open..
DeleteThanks! Was it open as another business or just abandoned? I have not been across on I-10 in a long time.
DeleteThe location in Columbia MO. was at the intersection of Highway 63 and I-70. I used to think it was the original because it was named "Granddad nickerson's" They had the best patty melts.
ReplyDeleteJust thought you should know, there is a Nickerson Farms Road in Marion, Texas. If you take Stagecoach Road and drive aways, you make a right hand turn and you are on Nickerson Farms Road. It then hits the IH10 access road. The building is still there, but it's an Exxon and a Dairy Queen. Been ages since I drove that way.
ReplyDeleteThe NF at Picacho Peak in AZ stood abandoned for many years. It has now been torn down with only the entry cover still standing.
ReplyDelete:( I miss you Nickerson Farms you will never come back
ReplyDeleteThe one in Cameron Missouri still stands and goats a bar and grill in it its a ok place
ReplyDeleteI own that building now it’s a climate controlled storage facility. Still in good shape.
DeleteThere was one at I-55 and US 61 in Crystal City, MO (Exit 170). It has been a couple of other restaurants since, but I think is currently vacant.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's still there, but in visibly poor condition as of July 2022 when I last drove past it. I didn't even know what it had been until I found this site after again seeing the abandoned one at High Hill, MO (I-70) and decided to do some research.
DeleteHigh Hill is still vacant and still standing but in very poor shape now. The main building is intact, and the structural iron work for the covered fueling area as well, but the red roof over the where the fuel pump islands were located is gone. Uprights for the large sign are still present. Almost looks like the foundation or footing for the main building is starting to fail visibly on the exterior though, this is visible while driving past it.
This location has been vacant for at least 30 years, as I have periodically driven that stretch of 70 during that time and it has never been open in the past three decades that I've ever observed.
Incredible to me it is still standing after all this time. I wonder who owns it and why they have left it as is, entirely unused.
Crystal City, Mo at I-55 & US 61 is gone now but I had no idea at the time. We were part way home on our 400 mi trip back to Wisconsin after viewing the April 8th 2024 eclipse in Jackson Mo. We pulled into a parking area next to the BP to escape the post-apocalyptic traffic jamb which had occurred in ALL directions by people returning home and parked on a large concrete area to reassess things. Horn were honking, ambulance sirens were screaming, people were relieving themselves on all of the brushlines, and there still was kind of a weird "we're all in this together" party feel to it. After I got home I had to look up the corner on Google Maps street view to see where we were. I saw there was a 'see more dates tab', so I clicked it and found the pic of a Nickerson Farms building that was once on the concrete pad we were parked on. Cool!
DeleteWow, thanks for this. I had no idea there was a store there, I have nothing on it, neither post card no placemat. I hope someone knows more about it. The eclipse was great, we were in north Dallas.
DeleteThe Nickerson Farms in Marengo Ohio is open and called Farmstead these days. The list shows it in Fargo, OH.
ReplyDeleteIt's just off of I-71 and I exited the interstate and got dinner across the street at that location, just so I could photograph it.
Thanks for maintaining this site. Our family never stopped at NF IIRC, always preferring the blue roofed competition.
Sadly the former Nickerson Farms on US 23 and Stearns in Ottawa Lake, MI has since been abandoned by 2013 when these videos popped up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwT8OcPiukU
A Google Street View from late 2015 shows the site is still abandoned so it's rather a shame they couldn't get any business in that part of the county.

My Dad use to love writing checks in the Paxico site just to watch the faces of the clerks..haha Gary Nickerson
ReplyDeleteive been meaning to post for a while. your missing 2 nickerson farm locations at least. one is in waynesville, mo. idk when it became witmor farms but there was one nickerson farms pc floating out there with that location. sadly its been torn down. its actually in buckhorn mo. I-44 and us 17. there is one in kodak, tn. i found the pc on ebay about 3 years ago now. it looks nothing like the common nf's. i cant pinpoint the exact location but i think theres a mobile gas station currently in its place. neighboring a now demoed hotel. exit 407 I-40 @ TN 86 Route 2. ive marked on google earth since i started this venture in researching NF. ive been through 3 computers now and marked them on google earth 4x now. i cant figure out how to save the markers externally or permanently post them to google earth so others can see the locations. im still missing a ton of locations mainly due to google earth doesnt go back far enough to see. the reason why i got into nickerson farms is cause back in i think 95 my family was going to see my cousins columbia, mo. this was at night and my father had stopped at the high hill location. it was for sale at the time and much better shape. my father wanted to turn it into a house. i thought at the time it was a church or old motel. fast forward to 2010. i had this like itch and i first googled abandoned church in high high. well after a couple of clicks i found out what it was. started reading up on it. i was like wow wish i could of gone but i was born when it closed. then i went to ebay and the first nf postcard was for sale was 3 from the newton, iowa. sadly i didnt start collecting till the following year. wish i started earlier. i have nearlly 130 pc, about 12 tokens, shreaded remains of the one in waynesville, mo, the bank, 2 coloring books, one laminate menu, one paper, one place mat, couple of maps. i missed a napkin on ebay. the one thing i would love to have is a red tile from a NF location. was wanting one from the picachu peak location since it came down. im gonna do a video of my collection on youtube in the future. thanks everybody for reading :)
ReplyDeleteAfter much research, I do not find one Buckhorn. There was one at Phillipsburg and St James. I do not think Whitmor Farms was ever a Nickerson Farms, but I think they existed at the same time. I would love to have a copy of a post card or place mat to show the actual existence of these. I also have around 100 post cards and all location research came from road atlas, place mats or any other document. I have also traveled to many locations to walk the ground. I am open to any help.
DeleteI worked for a advertising agency in Oklahoma City and handled Nickerson Farms in Oklahoma. I was friends with I.J. Nickerson. He used to drive his Edsel station wagon with his bird dog in the back to OKC. I would go with him the airport and pick up his friend Bill Reynolds of Reynolds Aluminum and they would go bird hunting in northern Oklahoma and Kansas. One time we went to the Nickerson Farms on I35 in south OKC and ordered. Then I told the waiter who he was and Mr. N. asked to speak with a manager. The manager got a favorable review from Mr. Nickerston.
ReplyDeleteI find ndly remember the family road trips in our 1972 Ford Country Squire station wagon down Hwy 44 / old Rte 66 headed to our grandparents house in Mansfield, MO. We'd stop at the St. James location and beg our parents to buy us something in the gift shop after we ate. Also remember the beehive inside the store where you could see the bees thru the glass panel.
ReplyDeleteI have so many fond memories of NF in Arkansas. My sister went to UCA and when we’d go see her from NE Arkansas, that’s where we stopped to eat lunch. My grandma loved their sugar cured and country ham. I don’t recall what I liked but I know they (like Stuckeys) had those pecan logs. I don’t know if the one in Widener is still standing but the one near Me enifee is but had long since been turned into a convenience store. Many great childhood memories of NF!
ReplyDeletewe loved Nickerson Farms, they were a common stopping point, on our many trips from Mn. to Tex. The chicken dinners were the best! to bad we can't bring them back
ReplyDeleteA fire heavily damaged the former Nickerson Farms retsaurant building along I-70 at Paxico, KS, on Thursday night, Nov. 8, 2018. Investigation is continuing. A person set their self on fire at the front door after the business had closed. That person died.
ReplyDeletePlease do not forget the Missouri location that existed at the juncture of I-55 and US 61.
ReplyDeleteThe only one I could find on I-55 is in Benton. What town was close?
DeleteMy dad helped hanged the sheet rock at the Stotts City Mo store. I have a picture I took in 1986 of Picacho Peak AZ beside the NF store.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Stotts City is long gone, the foundation was used for an existing building. You are welcome to send pictures.
DeleteWhen I was a kid we went to the Nickerson farm at the Marengo Ohio exit. I always like going there because they had an observation beehive in the lobby was just intrigued me. It was a one restaurant that I always wanted to go to because they had bees in the lobby. Since that time I've made a career of being an apiarist for Ohio State University and for my own business
ReplyDeleteDid NF push you to have an interest in bees? That is wonderful.
DeleteI remember the bees at the Columbia Missouri location back in the 70's. We would plead with our parents to stop there just to see the bees.
DeleteMount Olive, Illinois had a location. You can still see the remnants of it if you go to Google Maps aerial view at the I-55 interchange at the White City/Mount Olive exit. It was on the southwest side of the road.
ReplyDeleteI never did visit a Nickerson Farms, but my whole life I’ve heard from my parents how they worked at one in Phoenix, AZ, in the late 60s, early 70s. They told me a story of how my dad was a cook, and my mom was a waitress, and they ended up getting engaged and later married at the restaurant. So alot of the old pictures of my parents’ wedding have the Nickerson Farms logos and design in them. I would upload some pics, but, tragically, my moms house burned down in 2013, along with her wedding photos. We are in the process of contacting other relatives who were at the wedding for replacements. However, another story I find ironic, is that in the early 90s, I got a job at a Stuckys in Arkansas. I found out recently that I J Nickerson had previously been a franchise owner of Stuckys, and broke with them to create Nickerson Farms.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they worked at Picacho Peak, southeast of Phoenix, that would be the only one which really existed as far as I can tell. Sorry about your pictures, I hope you find replacements. If you find a great NF one, please share!
DeletePurcell , Oklahoma location was tore down summer of 2020. I worked there the winter of 1975. On the end of my shift one cold windy night the manager and i were the last to leave at 11pm . My car would not start cause the battery went dead. he just left me stranded there and drove off. He knew it did not start but did not care. What a sorry person he was. Thank god there was a payphone that worked outside to call my mother to pick me up.
ReplyDeleteThat is just flat wrong, we also had a couple managers who left a lot to be desired. I remember on getting a big old slap in the face after patting one waitress on the behind.
DeleteMy girlfriend worked at one east of Denver on i70 around Tower Rd
ReplyDeleteSadly that one is gone as well, in fact I cannot find anything to prove it ever existed.
DeleteThe one east of Denver on I-70 is in Bennett, CO, on the south side of the interstate across from Love's. It's currently a lumberyard and Ace Hardware (I work here). The roof was damaged by hail last year, and now it's getting replaced with a beige one, which has a lot old timers coming out and reminiscing about when it was a NF. One of them even mentioned there being a beehive in the wall. We all thought he was delusional until I found this blog!
DeleteThe Nickerson Farms building outside of Waverly, Nebraska was reopened as a restaurant called Waverly Farms sometime back in the 1980's but it only lasted a few years.
ReplyDeleteIn the 90's the property was purchased and reopened as an all-nude, non-alcoholic strip club (a.k a. "juice bar") known as Shaker's. It quickly gained wide notoriety, much to the chagrin of the people of Waverly, many of whom considered it a nuisance and an eyesore, especially after the owner painted the building pink.
Shaker's went out of business in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the structure sat empty until the property was recently purchased and the structure was finally demolished this past week.
Well, it had a good long life, even if it was an odd life. I am sad to see the buildings torn down, but they were not very high quality to start with. Thanks for the great comment.
ReplyDeleteHello anyone from Indiana. I found a matchbook cover from Nickersons in Dale Indiana, I-64 and US-31. Can anyone tell me if this store existed?
ReplyDeleteI believe that the location in Mt. Cory Ohio was at the intersection of I-75 and St Rte 235
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered if a building in Festus, MO was an old Nickerson Farms. It was just recently torn down sadly. I have SO many memories of eating there with my grandparents as a kid. They had the thrown rolls...SO good...& they always had honey, molasses, & honey butter on the table for them, really good fried chicken, & mashed potatoes, & desserts ❤️. I think I remember them having one of those dessert display cases on the small bar area..??.
ReplyDeleteThe building looked just like a Nickerson Farms, red roof & all. Restaurant on one side, store/souvenir shop on the other that you walked thru to get to the restaurant..(where I always got to buy something if I ate good lol). I can vividly remember a couple things i got there. It seems it was called something else, shut down for a while & everyone was sad about it, then reopened under the name Laddie Boys. I just can't remember what the original name was. Don't know if it was a true Nickerson Farms or a copycat. It was right off hwy 55 & hwy 61 south of Festus, MO. If anyone knows the actual facts of the history of this restaurant plz share. 😊
Did Baldwin, WI ever come to fruition? I can't find any information about it
ReplyDeleteOn Baldwin, I doubt it was ever built. I show it as "coming soon" on two pieces of ads, but do not have any post card or other proof of being built. There is a three legged sign there like NF used and a fireworks stand that might have been, but I would have to walk around to know for sure. I have not been there but welcome anyone that has more information.
ReplyDeleteThe old building at High Hill, MO is still there (as of 3-24-24).
ReplyDelete
